Study: Kids swaying healthful nutrition and consumer choices

There’s a new class of food consumers that PR and marketing pros mustn’t ignore.

A global study from Ketchum—Food2020—finds there are significant changes in children’s awareness and attitudes about what we eat, grow and make.

Highlights of the Food 2020 research are featured in this infographic.

  • Nearly 40 percent of parents surveyed said their children look at labels.

  • Some 38 percent said their kids dislike foods with certain ingredients.

  • More than 30 percent of parents said their youngsters prefer organic or locally produced food.

  • Approximately 25 percent said their children avoid processed foods.

For example, chocolatier Hershey recently announced it is rebranding with fresh offerings of nutritious products. The company has also launched a mobile app called SmartLabel that lists nutritional value, ingredients and allergens.

Hershey and many other food manufacturers, according to Ketchum’s data, have changed a product, eliminated ingredients or reworked menus to align with customer expectations.

Health care communicators, how are you responding to this healthful power shift?
